The Alabama Center for Health Statistics files divorce certificates for all divorces that takes place in Alabama.  The Center started filing divorce in 1950.  In order to access information for divorces that occurred prior to 1950, one may contact the circuit court in the county where the divorce was granted.

In Alabama, divorce certificates are not confidential and may be obtained upon payment of a proper fee.  The fee to search a divorce certificate is $15.00.  For each additional copy of the certificate ordered at the same time, the fee is $6.00.  Upon payment of the fee, a person gets one certified copy of the divorce certificate or a “Certificate of Failure to Find.”

Fee can be paid via checks or money orders.  Checks or Money Orders should be made payable to “Vital Records.”  Cash should not be sent. If a person is in immediate need of the certificate, he/she may pay additional fee and obtain the records quickly.  Fees paid for accessing the records are not refundable.

A person making a request for the divorce certificate must submit the following information:

  • full name of husband
  • full maiden name of wife
  • date of divorce
  • name of the county where divorce was granted
  • name and signature of the applicant
  • address where the certificate is to be mailed
  • daytime phone number of the applicant

Divorce Certificates may be obtained by mail, in person or ordered electronically.

A person can access a divorce certificate by mail by sending the required details and appropriate fee to the Alabama Vital Records.  Application forms to obtain divorce certificates are available online.

A divorce certificate can be obtained in person by furnishing the required details and fee to any County Health Department in the State of Alabama.

Divorce Certificates may be ordered electronically through a service provider called VitalChek using a credit card.  Additional fee is charged if this service is used.

In order to access divorce certificate of a divorce that did not take place in Alabama, one may contact the National Center for Health Statistics.  The National has information on vital records for all states.
